Online retailing giants Amazon is set to launch a new product currently under the working title of Amazon Sponsored Links. It is thought the company has developed the platform with a mind to getting a slice of Google’s Adwords pie.
According to the Wall Street Journal the company’s new ad offering may appear later this year. It is believed that initially the company will just use the new ad system to replace Adsense on its own pages with no details regards any wider roll out.
Advertisers are sure to be very keen on advertising via Amazon as the company has so much data on its customers.
However, in order to be a serious threat to Adwords they would really need to develop an Adsense style platform so that publishers other than themselves could display their ads.
For webmasters this would probably be a good thing since at the moment Adsense has no real competitors…certainly nobody who can match their eCPM on text only ads.
